It's Versatile, can be used with a shield, it qualifies for a ton of feats (Polearm Master, Sentinel, Shield Master, even Dual Wielder) the only real downside is it's not Heavy and so doesn't qualify for GWM. There's some solid magical staffs (even martial ones), and the Shillelagh buff stacks with those (and in the meantime makes it comparable to your more traditional options like longsword). The quarterstaff is a surprisingly useful weapon. For Athletics, proficiency will still make up for a good chunk of lost stat increase. You'll want enough to not fall over in heavy armor (but see Dex above), and it's used for some melee-centric saves monsters throw out - but they're usually not the lethal type and if you can avoid it to stack your attack and damage somewhere more useful, it's a solid idea! Other saves can be far more important (see bit about Con and Dex above), and you've got your aura helping on Str saves anyway. It allows you to max it out quickly and then expand into feats or shore up weaknesses in other stats (like Con, or if you want more Initiative and to avoid heavy armor, Dex).īesides being the de facto tank melee damage stat, Strength isn't that great. I mean, it's unique, but it's not really unique enough to warrant the uselessness of such a thing. Plus, being limited to a quarterstaff or club (If I recall correctly) is kinda pointless, since you can just pick up a longsword. Charisma seems reasonable, but I can't see why any paladin wouldn't bump their Strength (Or Dex if you do that) up to be on par with CHA or better. So I would wager that Magic Initiate is just a bad idea. Obviously, doing the former only makes Shillelagh use your Wisdom, and the latter using Charisma. ![]() I've seen a few posts here and on a few other sites that mention giving a paladin Shillelagh-sometimes through Magic Initiate, sometimes by multiclassing warlock and going Pact of the Tome.
